By Wednesday, they had filled four whole pages.
There were dogs, houses, aeroplanes, and a sandwich that Leo missed from home.
They used their hands, too. They pointed. They waved. They pulled a face that meant look out!
"Those are gestures," said Miss Chan. "You can say a lot with your hands."
By Friday, Leo knew six English words.
Meg knew four words in Leo's language. She said every one of them wrong, and Leo laughed so hard that he slid off the bench.
By the end of the month, Leo played basketball at every break.
Half the class could count to ten in his language. Leo taught them at lunch, faster and faster, showing off.
"How did you talk to him?" Ken asked Meg. "I did not know where to start."
"I just started," said Meg. "Talking is not only words."
